Why is the radar behind by 5 to 10 minutes?
Doppler radar stations take between 5-10 minutes to complete a 360-degree scan of the surrounding area. When the scan is complete, the stations then send us the radar data, which we then show in MyRadar. This means the radar will also be 5-10 minutes behind real time, because we're waiting for a new set of data from the radar stations to display in the app. If there's a delay of longer than 10 minutes, you may be in a place with weak cellular or internet connectivity.
If you run into this issue while connected to a stable internet connection, try closing other apps that are running in the background to see if that will help MyRadar catch up.
How do I get back missing upgrades?
If the "Restore Previous Purchases" button in the Settings menu doesn't get your purchases back, please check the platform-specific articles mentioned at the top of this one, or reach out to our Help Desk.
How do I view future radar?
Our Future Radar feature allows users to view up to 45 minutes of future radar. This feature is only compatible with our HiDef Radar. In order for this feature to work properly you must use it in CONUS and be zoomed in a certain amount. You can enable Future Radar in HiDef radar's settings menu:
- Tap on the radar in the color bar at the bottom
- Tap on "HiDef radar settings" at the bottom of the menu
- There should be a Future Radar toggle in the settings.
We also have a Radar Forecast feature available. Radar Forecast allows users to view forecasted reflectivity from weather models up to 10 hours into the future.
- Tap on the radar in the color bar at the bottom
- Tap on Radar Forecast.
How do I see more forecast details?
Pull down on the Forecast Bar at the top of the app to view the Extended Forecast. Here you can see:
- Your current location
- The Air Quality Index bar
- A precipitation chart over the next two hours
- The Hourly Forecast for the next 24 hours
- A 10 Day Glance chart which reflects Temperature and Precipitation
- The Detailed 10 Day Forecast for Temperature, Precipitation, Winds, or Cloud coverage
- Detail cells for: Feels Like temperature, Air Pressure. Humidity, Dew Point, Wind, Gusts, Visibility, Air Quality Index, UV Index, Moon Phase, Sunrise, and Sunset
- A summary for the weather of the day
- Our MyDrives feature
- The Historical Temperature Trends chart
How do I share a radar image or animation?
Tapping the share icon on the tool bar at the bottom of the app will allow you to share the current radar as an image or an animation through email, text, and more.
If you do not see the Share button, try extending the toolbar with the caret icon in the right-hand side of the toolbar.
Can I upload weather photos to the app?
First, make sure you have a MyRadar Account. If you have not created an Account, you can do so in the app's Settings menu:
- Tap on the Gear icon in the toolbar
- Tap on MyRadar Account
- Tap on Sign In
- On the page that loads, tap on Create an account
How do I comment on other people's weather photos in the app?
Once you have a MyRadar Account created, you can comment on user uploaded photos by tapping on the photo in the gallery and then tapping on the comment section towards the bottom of the image.
How do I turn on/off different layers?
Tap the stacked boxes icon on the bottom left of the app to open the Layers menu. You can turn layers on/off with the switches on the right-hand side of the Layers.
How do I turn off the live cameras on the map?
That is part of the Storm Chasers/Live Cameras layer, which can be disabled in the Layers menu (stack of squares icon in the toolbar). If you want to see one without the other, tap on the layer's row in the Layers menu to open its settings for individual Storm Chaser and Live Camera toggles.
Why are there specks of radar data? (Clean Air mode)
When there’s no precipitation in the area, it’s common for the radar to be operating in what is called “Clear Air Mode.” In this mode, the radar is scanning more slowly so that it can be more sensitive and pick up much weaker returns. This allows it to see more details and detect finer particles in the atmosphere, including things like dust and insects.
This more sensitive mode of operation allows meteorologists to see what’s going on in the atmosphere even though no rain is falling. Clear Air Mode gives meteorologists the ability to see things like cold fronts and subtle air mass boundaries. When conditions are right, these boundaries can become the focal point for storm initiation, so being able to see them is extremely important.
This mode is also useful for detecting very light drizzle and light snow. Sometimes these phenomena do not generate a strong enough return signal to be detected in precipitation mode but are clearly visible in the more sensitive clear air mode.
What's the difference between Hi Def and Composite Radar?
Both radars are created in house by our team of engineers and use different filters and priorities. Hi Def Radar shows smooth, high-resolution radar that blends across radar stations to show on-the-ground conditions. Composite Radar shows a combined radar view without any smoothing filters and with less filtering to show radar data that may not affect ground conditions.
What are these pins on my map?
The pins on you're seeing on the map are Favorites pins. In the Forecast Bar at the top of the screen, you should see the estimated weather for the day as well as an outline of a pin. Tapping this pin when the crosshairs are centered over a city or town, will "Favorite" this location for future reference.
When you have multiple cities favorited a quick left to right swipe motion in the Forecast Ticker Bar will auto-locate the next favorite on the map.
Just tap the gold pin in the ticker bar again to make it disappear from the map!
How to switch between Dark Mode and Light Mode?
MyRadar does not have a Light Mode or Dark Mode, but certain map types are brighter in color than others. To change the Map Type that the radar is on, tap on the trifold brochure icon in the bottom left corner of MyRadar. This will open the Map Type menu, where you'll see 7 options: Gray, Roads, Aerial, Topography, Pro Dark, Pro Light, and Daylight.
- Gray is a darker colored map that could be preferred if the Roads view is too bright for your liking.
- Roads is a brighter colored map that shows major roads.
- Aerial is a satellite image view of the map. Note that this image is *not* live and may not reflect accurately on the most up-to-date satellite imaging depending on where you live.
- Topography shows a topographical map which includes 'contour' lines that show changes in elevation.
- Pro Dark and Light are map types with cartography tailored for meteorologists and weather enthusiasts.
- Daylight is a lighter version of the map.
VFR, Low IFR, and High IFR can be unlocked as part of the Aviation Charts subscription. For more details on our subscriptions, see this article.
Mars changes the map of Earth to a map of the surface of Mars. To get back to Earth, tap on the trifold brochure icon in the bottom left corner and then select any of the map types at the top of the menu.
Tapping on any of the options will change the Map Type to that option. When you're done, click "Done" in the top right and the map type will update to your selection.
Can I remove roads/ road labels?
- Tap on the trifold brochure icon in the lefthand side of the app's toolbar
- Scroll down to the bottom of the Map Types menu to find the toggles for Place Labels, Roads, and Road Labels
Why does my app keep opening on Tulsa, OK?
When your location is showing somewhere like Towanda, KS or Null Island, it likely means that MyRadar is having a hard time pulling your current location, so it resorts to using one of those defaults.
Double-check that MyRadar has location permissions granted in the Settings app of your device. If issues persist, submit a diagnostic report from the in-app Settings menu and create a ticket on our Help Desk here.
No radar is showing on the map.
First, make sure there are no VPNs when using MyRadar, as they can severely affect how the app loads. You should also check the app store for any pending updates to MyRadar.
If there's still no radar, tap on the radar labeled in the color bar at the bottom of the screen to open the Weather Loops and Radars menu. Select another Weather Loop like HiDef or Composite and check if the same loading issue happens across several loop types.
If issues persist, submit a diagnostic report from the in-app Settings menu and reach out to our Help Desk here.
